Garba is a traditional folk dance from Gujarat, India, performed in devotion to Goddess Durga during the festival of Navratri. The word ‘Garba’ comes from the Sanskrit word garbha meaning womb, symbolizing life and fertility. Dancers move in circular formations around a central lamp or an idol of the Goddess, clapping or using sticks (dandiya) in rhythmic steps. Garba represents the eternal cycle of creation and energy, with the circle symbolizing time that has no beginning or end. Women traditionally wear colorful chaniya cholis with mirror work, while men wear kediyas and turbans, making Garba not just a dance but a vibrant cultural celebration of joy, devotion, and togetherness.
